ABSTRACT

Contemporary changes in the world of work have imposed greater demands on workers and sometimes proved conducive to different forms of violence, such as moral harassment at work. This study aimed to understand how Brazilian researchers have been investigating this phenomenon. A literature review of publications indexed in Brazilian SciELO, PePSIC and Index Psi Periódicos databases was carried out. The characteristics of the production, methodological procedures, objectives and results presented in the papers were analyzed. It was possible to see the relevance of current research and interventions, the diversity of objectives and contexts investigated, as well as the need for an analysis that considers the subjective dimension, the characteristics of the organization, the work team and the society to understand the phenomenon. Finally, the data demonstrated the need for a systemic view in investigations and interventions and to raise society's awareness of the importance of preventing and tackling moral harassment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Harassment means systemic and repeated unethical acts. Research on workplace harassment have been conducted widely and the NAQ-R has been widely used for the researches. But this tool, however the limitations in revealing differended in sub-factors depending on the culture and in reflecting that unique characteristics of the Koren society. So, The workplace harassment questionnaire for Korean finace and service workers has been developed to assess the level of personal harassment at work. This study aims to develop a tool to assess the level of personal harassment at work and to test its validity and reliability while examining specific characteristics of workplace harassment against finance and service workers in Korea. METHODS: The framework of survey was established based on literature review, focused-group interview for the Korean finance and service workers. To verify its reliability, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated; and to verify its validity, items and factors of the tool were analyzed. The correlation matrix analysis was examined to verify the tool’s convergent validity and discriminant validity. Structural validity was verified by checking statistical significance in relation to the BDI-K. RESULTS: Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of this survey was 0.93, which indicates a quite high level of reliability. To verify the appropriateness of this survey tool, its construct validity was examined through factor analysis. As a result of the factor analysis, 3 factors were extracted, explaining 56.5 % of the total variance. The loading values and communalities of the 20 items were 0.85 to 0.48 and 0.71 to 0.46. The convergent validity and discriminant validity were analyzed and rate of item discriminant validity was 100 %. Finally, for the concurrent validity, We examined the relationship between the WHI-KFSW and pschosocial stress by examining the correlation with the BDI-K. The results of chi-square test and multiple logistic analysis indicated that the correlation with the BDI-K was satatisctically significant. CONCLUSION: Workplace harassment in actual workplaces were investigated based on interviews, and the statistical analysis contributed to systematizing the types of actual workplace harassment. By statistical method, we developed the questionare, 20 items of 3 categories.

ABSTRACT

This article recognizes the importance of strengthening the knowledge on the working environment -from the dimension and perspective of the workers--and the identification of its determiners. From there, mobbing has become a relevant public health issue, because it eases the generation of social and institutional information. Literature and current legislation reviews about mobbing were conducted for its elaboration. Within this research, the role of an instrument that defines intervention actions is highlighted for incorporating strategies to access information and make decisions in relation to social-sanitary policies and the aspects related to their development. It is consigned that mobbing has to be closely related to equity in health to be approached, and it is possible to intervene problems affecting economic development in order to improve the quality of life of workers and their relationship with the working environment, through the rational use of the evidence available.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Several studies point out the high risk of misdiagnosing delusional disorder and paranoid personality disorder in victims of mobbing or workplace harassment (WPH). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the extent to which the symptoms attributable to mobbing are misidentified with criteria for two paranoid spectrum nosologies (delusional disorder and paranoid personality disorder). METHODS: Literature review of PubMed and SciELO from 1990 to June 2009. RESULTS: The identification of paranoid spectrum symptoms in victims of mobbing is not consistent with the literature, which, by contrast, shows a notable presence of symptoms in the post-traumatic stress spectrum (as much as 92 percent), although they do not meet the A1 criterion for this nosology. Some of the causes of wrong diagnosis are noted, such as a tendency to confuse hypervigilance (D4 criterion for post-traumatic stress disorder in DSM-IV-TR) with paranoid ideation, the existence of a defensive profile in victims of WPH, and lack of recognition on the part of clinicians of the stressful and traumatizing impact of mobbing. DISCUSSION: Longitudinal and mixed methodology (qualitative and quantitative) studies are necessary in order to establish robust differential diagnosis criteria that clearly distinguish the clinical manifestations attributable to workplace harassment from paranoid spectrum symptoms.
